QUICK CHECK

Conversion Factors - Check for Understanding

You can use conversion factors to convert between measures. Practice identifying and using conversion factors to convert measures.

Question 1

Which conversion factor could you use to convert 20 feet to yards?

  • 1 yd/3 ft

  • 3 ft/1 yd

How many yards are 20 feet?   ______

Question 2

Which conversion factor could you use to convert 20 feet to inches?

  • 1 ft/12 in.

  • 12 in/ 1 ft

How many inches are 20 feet?   _____

Basic Conversion Problems

  1. Convert 72 inches to feet.

  2. Convert 5 feet to inches.

  3. Convert 3 yards to feet.

  4. Convert 10 feet to yards.

  5. Convert 5280 feet to miles.

  6. Convert 2 miles to yards.

  7. Convert 36 inches to yards.

  8. Convert 0.5 miles to feet.

1ft. = 12in

1yd. = 3ft. = 36in.

1mi. = 1760yd. = 5280ft. = 63360

Word Problems

  1. A carpenter cuts a 4-yard wooden beam into sections of 2 feet each. How many sections does he get?

  2. A hiking trail is 8,448 yards long. Convert the length of the trail into miles.

  3. A rectangular garden measures 12 feet in length and 5 yards in width. What is the total perimeter in feet?

1.08 Metric System Conversions

Lesson Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the metric system and its base-10 structure.

  2. Convert between metric units of length, mass, and volume using multiplication and division.

  3. Use a conversion chart to solve real-world problems involving metric measurements.

California Content Standards: (Mathematics, Grade 6)

  • 6.RP.3.d: Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.

  • 6.NS.3: Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.

Think About It

“Why do scientists and most countries use the metric system instead of inches and pounds?”

  • The metric system is based on powers of 10, making conversions easy using multiplication and division.

  • Base Units: Meter (m) for length, Liter (L) for volume, Gram (g) for mass.

  • Conversion Tip: Move the decimal left when converting to a smaller unit and right when converting to a larger unit.

Example 1:

Convert 24.56 mm = ________ meters

Example 2:

Convert .0065 Km = _______ cm

Example 3:

Convert 45 liters = ________ Dekalters

Exit Ticket:

In the chat, write one real-world example where you would use the metric system and need to convert from one unit to another.
